One of the top high school basketball players in the country has decided to commit to the University of Minnesota next season.

Amir Coffey, a star at Minnetonka's Hopkins High School, will stay home and play for the Gophers, announcing his choice at a news conference on Monday.

The son of former Gophers and Timberwolves player Richard Coffey, Amir is the state's top-ranked recruit and one of the top 60 in the country. He had numerous offers, including several from Big Ten schools such as Wisconsin and Michigan State.

The 6-foot-7 guard said he was excited to join coach Richard Pitino and play at the same school his dad did in the late 1980s, according to the Star Tribune.
