Forget the royal baby. The royal twins are here.
Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer and his wife, Maddie, welcomed twin girls early Wednesday morning. The Mauers, who were married last year, named their first children Emily and Maren.
Mauer has become one of the most popular Twins players over the years, so news of his engagement was widely talked about in the Twin Cities. The hashtag "MauerTwins" was even circulating on Twitter. Much of the buzz was created when it was announced that Mauer and his wife were expecting their first children -- fittingly, it was twins for the Twins catcher.
Just minutes before Tuesday's game, Mauer was scratched from the lineup when he learned that his wife was going into labor. The Twins' All-Star catcher was officially placed on the paternity list on Wednesday. After catching a plan back to Minneapolis, Mauer was able to make it back to the Minnesota hospital at 3:05 a.m. and in time to witness the birth of his daughters 30 minutes later.
The Twins called up catcher Drew Butera from Triple-A Rochester to take Mauer's place on the roster while he's on the paternity list. Meanwhile, Mauer's last-minute replacement Tuesday, catcher Chris Herrmann, hit a key grand slam in the 10th inning of Tuesday's 10-3 Twins victory.
Of course, Mauer had a big victory of his own early Wednesday morning.
