TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's Jameis Winston recorded his first base hit of the season last week -- but then was picked off -- as the Seminoles remained undefeated through six games.

The Heisman Trophy winner continued to show his versatility on the diamond with appearances on the mound, in the field and at the plate. He and the team received an extra day off Sunday when the final game of the weekend series against Georgia was canceled due to rain.

Winston should get a chance to test himself against major leaguers when Florida State plays at the New York Yankees on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Tampa.

Right-hander Mike Compton will start for Florida State and is expected to pitch an inning or two.

A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:

IN RELIEF: The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder didn't have a save opportunity as Florida State won the three games it played last week against Jacksonville and Georgia by a combined score of 30-13. He appeared in two of the three games. Winston's line for the week: 2.0 innings pitched, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB, 7 batters faced.

AT THE PLATE: Winston made just one plate appearance in the three games. He pinch-hit and singled to left field in the seventh inning of Game 1 against Georgia. Winston was then picked off at first base. His line this week: 1 appearance, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R.

IN THE FIELD: He played right field in the eighth and ninth innings against Georgia on Friday. He did not field a ball.

HIGHLIGHTS: Winston has retired 12 of 13 batters he's faced and has not allowed a run. He had back-to-back strikeouts against Georgia on Saturday. Opponents are hitting .077 against him.

ON DECK: Florida State plays the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The Seminoles will play host to Miami on Friday-Sunday.

QUOTABLE: ''I'm glad that we were able to get him in because he is the kind of guy that wants to compete,'' coach Mike Martin told the Tallahassee Democrat after Saturday's game. ''It gave him a chance to compete. And he pitched extremely well. You could see the slider was very effective for him and the fastball had the usual movement.''
