Callback wins $300K Las Virgenes by half-length at Santa Anita

Callback won the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by a half-length Saturday at Santa Anita for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, Callback ran a mile in 1:36.92 and paid $7.20, $5 and $4.40. She ran without blinkers restricting her vision for the first time in her career.

Light the City returned $8.20 and $6.20, while Achiever's Legacy was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $6.80 to show.

Maybellene, the 2-1 favorite also trained by Baffert, finished last in the eight-horse field.

Callback, a Kentucky-bred filly by Street Sense, earned $180,000 for the victory, increasing her career money to $245,450, with her second victory.

In the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes, Avanzare won by 1 1/4 lengths under Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens.

The 5-year-old gelding ran one mile on the turf in 1:34.17 and paid $13.80, $6.20 and $3.80.

Za Approval returned $4.40 and $3.20, while Home Run Kitten was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $3 to show. Kaigun, the 6-5 favorite, was fourth.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Avanzare's career earnings to $385,180, with six wins in 12 starts.

In the $200,000 Palos Verdes Stakes for older horses, Conquest Two Step won by 1 1/4 lengths under Joe Talamo, who rode his third winner on the card.

Conquest Two Step ran six furlongs in 1:08.10 and paid $13, $5.40 and $3.20.

The Baffert-trained Secret Circle returned $4 and $3, while Wild Dude was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $3 to show.

Distinctiv Passion, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Conquest Two Step's career earnings to $309,408, with three wins in 10 starts.
