Seattle outlasted Arizona in its last game to even the road set with the Diamondbacks. Facing Trevor Cahill, however, won't make it easy for the Mariners to win a second straight series.
Cahill looks to win a fourth consecutive start and help the D-backs bounce back against the Mariners on Wednesday.
Casper Wells delivered a two-run pinch-hit single in the 10th inning and Ichiro Suzuki added four hits in Seattle's 12-9 victory over Arizona on Tuesday. Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the Mariners (30-40), who have won three of four to improve to 7-7 in interleague play this season.
Seattle pounded out 15 hits Tuesday, one night after its seven-game winning streak against the Diamondbacks (33-35) ended with a 7-1 defeat.
"It was a tough game, luckily we came away with a win," said Wells, who is 9 for 17 with four RBIs in six games since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
Suzuki recorded his 2,500th major league hit with a leadoff single. His second four-hit game of the season came after he went 1 for 12 in his previous three games.
"If you look at me know and if you look at me when I first got here in 2001, if I said my first day that my goal is to hit 2,500, on that day people would say that I was crazy," Suzuki said through an interpreter. "Now looking at, things do come true."
He is batting .407 (11 for 27) against Cahill (5-5, 3.08 ERA), who has allowed two runs and struck out 20 in 23 1-3 innings while winning his last three starts. He gave up three hits and fanned eight in seven innings of a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
"He's just been rolling, one start after another," Gibson said. "When he's got all of his pitches, he's doing a pretty good job managing the game."
Cahill, who pitched the previous three seasons for Oakland, is 4-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 11 starts versus Seattle. He's yielded a run over 12 innings while winning his last two against the Mariners.
The right-hander will try to help the Diamondbacks rebound after their six-game home winning streak ended Tuesday.
One night after becoming the fifth Arizona player to hit for the cycle, Aaron Hill homered and drove in two runs. The veteran second baseman is batting .568 (25 for 44) with three homers and 11 RBIs during a 12-game home hitting streak.
Hill is 9 for 20 with three home runs and seven RBIs in his last five games versus Seattle.
Jason Vargas (7-6, 3.95) hopes to cool off Hill and avoid a third consecutive losing start for the Mariners. The left-hander allowed four runs and two home runs in eight innings of a 4-2 loss to San Francisco on Friday.
Vargas has yielded 10 of his 15 home runs over the last seven starts.
"That's kind of what's been happening," Vargas told the Mariners' official website. "The home runs are what's killed it. It's frustrating when you throw it where you want and it happens to go like that."
Vargas has hardly been frustrated while going 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts versus the D-backs. The most recent outing came exactly two three years ago when he allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings of a 7-3 home victory June 20, 2009.
