MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers and center fielder Carlos Gomez have agreed to a one-year contract to avoid arbitration, the club announced Thursday.

Gomez, 27, hit a career-best .260 with a career-high 19 home runs, 51 RBI and a career-high 37 stolen bases in 137 games for the Brewers in 2012.

Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a trade for shortstop J.J. Hardy in November 2009, Gomez has sparkled defensively all along for Milwaukee but finally started to flash some of his vast offensive potential last season.

This is his final arbitration year, and he will become a free agent following the season.
With Gomez signed, only closer John Axford, reliever Burke Badenhop and starting pitcher Marco Estrada remain arbitration-eligible for the Brewers. Salary arbitration figures will be exchanged Friday, with hearings held Feb. 4-20.
