Blue Jackets ink two to two-way deals

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed a pair of players, defenseman Jaime Sifers and left wing Brett Gallant, to two-way NHL/AHL contracts.

Sifers, 32, has collected 24 goals and 86 assists for 110 points with 387 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 403 career American Hockey League games with the Springfield Falcons, Chicago Wolves, Houston Aeros and Toronto Marlies. He has also appeared in 37 career NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild, collecting 0-2-2 and 24 penalty minutes from 2008-10.

The Stratford, Connecticut native posted 3-19-22 with 82 penalty minutes and a +1 plus/minus rating in 76 games with Springfield during the 2014-15 campaign. He led the club in games played, finished third in penalty minutes and ranked second among defensemen in assists and points.

Prior to joining the Falcons in 2014-15, Sifers spent the previous three seasons with the Mannheim Eagles of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), Germany's top professional league, recording 9-54-63 and 185 penalty minutes in 154 games. He tallied 3-21-24, 62 penalty minutes and was +10 in 50 games in 2013-14. Originally signed by Toronto as a free agent, Sifers served as the team captain during his final three years at the University of Vermont. He netted 15-55-70 with 276 penalty minutes in 143 career games at Vermont from 2002-06.

Gallant, 26, has registered six goals and six assists for 12 points with 862 penalty minutes in 188 career American Hockey League games, primarily with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He also appeared in four NHL games with the New York Islanders during the 2013-14 season, averaging 6:53 time on ice per game and collecting 17 penalty minutes.

Last season, he tallied 2-4-6 and 247 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Tigers, ranking second in the AHL in penalty minutes. The 6-0, 198-pound Gallant racked up a career-high 255 penalty minutes in 58 games during the 2013-14 season to rank fourth in the AHL in that category. He stood ninth in the league with 202 penalty minutes in 42 games in 2012-13.

A native of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Gallant played three seasons with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2005-08. He registered 8-4-12 and 439 penalty minutes in 131 career QMJHL games, including 5-1-6 and 192 penalty minutes in 48 games in 2006-07.
