Tommie Smith returns to Mexico City to light Raiders torch

MEXICO CITY (AP) Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith returned to Mexico City to light the torch honoring late Raiders owner Al Davis before Oakland's game against Houston.

Raiders owner Mark Davis invited Smith to make the trip with the team. It is Smith's second time back in Mexico City since he famously raised his black-gloved fist with bronze medalist John Carlos as a sign of black power following his win in the 200-meter finals at the 1968 Olympics.

After lighting the torch in a pregame ceremony, Smith waved to the crowd at Azteca Stadium and raised his right fist to a loud ovation.
