Phillies: Freddy Galvis and Odubel Herrera Named Gold Glove Finalists

Two young Phillies have been named finalists for a Rawlings Gold Glove at their respective positions

Freddy Galvis and Odubel Herrera have amazed Phillies fans all season with their acrobatic style of play. With leaps, throws, dives, and catches, the two young catalysts are being recognized on a national scale.

Phillies insider Jim Salisbury reports that both Galvis and Herrera are finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove for shortstop and center field, respectively.

Galvis is up against Chicago’s Addison Russell and San Francisco’s Brandon Crawford.

Herrera is matched up against fellow young outfielders Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton and Atlanta’s Ender Inciarte for the center field Gold Glove.

Galvis has always been known more for his glove than his bat. He’s produced a 1.3 dWAR (defensive wins above replacement), eighth among National League shortstops. His eight errors were the second-lowest among National League shortstops, and the third-lowest among all shortstops.

Herrera has transitioned from second base to center field after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft two years ago. He posted a .8 dWAR, 10th in the National League among center fielders, and has the third-best range factor in baseball at 2.65. However, El Torito’s nine errors are the most among all center fielders.

Regardless, he has made some spectacular catches in center field despite many of them resulting from misread balls.

The winners of the Rawlings Gold Gloves will be announced on November 8 on ESPN.
