Padres 14, Rangers 5
Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run rally against Rich Harden and the San Diego Padres beat the Texas Rangers 14-5 Sunday.
After pitching three scoreless innings, Harden couldn't escape the fourth, leaving with two outs after giving up a double, triple, home run and walked in a run. Harden allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks in 3 2-3 innings.
Harden, who signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with a $1 million buyout if his 2011 option isn't picked up, allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks in 3 2-3 innings. Harden has an 11.75 ERA this spring but he said his only issue was changeup command - something he hopes to clean up over his final two starts this spring.
``It's kind of been my spring training so far,'' Harden said. ``My changeup just wasn't there. It kind of comes and goes and I was just leaving it up in the zone. I wanted to stick with it even though it was up a little.''
Hairston and Adrian Gonzalez each had two hits for the Padres.
Competing for one of two spots in the Padres' rotation, starter Sean Gallagher gave up five runs in the third inning. Pitching on three days' rest in place of Jon Garland, Gallagher didn't walk a batter but allowed five hits over four innings, including a three-run homer to Nelson Cruz. He said his fastball command wasn't as sharp as he would have liked it to be.
``Im still working on my fastball quite a bit,'' Gallagher said. ``I have been happy with it so far but Ive just gotta get over the hump in my mind.''
Michael Young also had two hits for Texas.
NOTES: Texas catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was scratched from the lineup because of a strained muscle in his upper left back. He was injured warming up the pitcher. X-rays were negative. Last season, Saltalamacchia had surgery on he right side for thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition where a rib bone pushes on a nerve and causes numbness in the arm and hand. ... Garland played catch before the game for the first time in four days. Garland, who manager Bud Black said is battling a ``cranky shoulder,'' is scheduled for a bullpen session Tuesday.
