Agent: Edmonds open to several options

Outfielder Jim Edmonds is officially looking for somewhere to play in 2010 –- and isn’t limiting his search to St. Louis, where he enjoyed the best years of his career.

His longtime agent, Paul Cohen, said in a telephone interview Tuesday that Edmonds has formally asked him to speak on his behalf "with a series of particular teams about his comeback."

Cohen indicated that Edmonds would consider playing any outfield position or first base. While Edmonds "obviously has an affinity for the Cardinals," Cohen said, he is also willing to play for other teams in either league.

"He feels great," Cohen said. "He would love to get back to the playoffs and reach 400 home runs. Those are the two goals he’s talking about right now."

Edmonds, who turns 40 in June, currently has 382 home runs. The left-handed hitter last appeared in the majors with the Cubs in 2008; he batted .256 with 19 home runs and 49 RBIs in 85 games for Chicago that year.

Cohen declined to address his client’s interest in specific teams. But Edmonds struggled in San Diego’s spacious Petco Park two years ago, so he will probably give priority to teams that play in smaller ballparks.

The Cubs, Braves and Yankees are currently open to adding another outfielder. The Giants, Mets and Tigers are, as well, but they play in bigger yards. It's not known if any of those six teams have interest.

Cohen said that Edmonds would be open to a platoon arrangement in which he faced all right-handed starters. "That would probably give him 400 plate appearances," Cohen estimated.
