Tight end Johnny Mundt named to John Mackey Award watch list

Published Jul. 8, 2015 3:41 p.m. ET

Oregon tight end Johnny Mundt has been named to the John Mackey Award watch list. The Mackey Award is given annually to the nations top tight end.

Mundt, a junior, has 18 career catches for 310 yards and three touchdowns. He is an interesting choice because he seemed to be the least likely of Oregon's three tight ends to be put on the watch list.

Oregon's starting tight end in 2014 was Pharaoh Brown. Brown had an incredible year and may have won the Mackey Award had he stayed healthy. Brown suffered a devastating leg injury last November against Utah and his status for the 2015 season is very much up in the air.

Brown's replacement last year, junior Evan Baylis, was solid as a starter and really shined in the Rose Bowl against Florida State. In that game, Baylis caught six passes for 73 yards.

Mundt is best remembered for his 2013 performance against Tennessee as a freshman when he caught five passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He's had a relatively quiet career since then.
