QB Josh Rosen headlines UCLA's strong recruiting class

LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA landed plenty of standout recruits with an impressive signing day surge, and the Bruins won't have to wait long to see whether their most touted addition can live up to his billing.

Josh Rosen, the consensus top quarterback in the nation, headlined UCLA's 19-man class announced Wednesday. The Bruins went heavy on offensive linemen, defensive backs and marquee talent from outside California.

After striking out on several top players at the end of the 2014 cycle, coach Jim Mora successfully landed tight end Chris Clark from Connecticut, running back Sotonye Jambo from Texas and offensive lineman Josh Wariboko from Oklahoma.

But no player will be more important to UCLA's immediate future than Rosen, who has been enrolled on campus since January and will be competing to replace three-year starter Brett Hundley.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Rosen threw for 8,473 yards and 90 touchdowns in his career at St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California, directing a spread offense with similarities to offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone's Bruin scheme.

''It was such an exciting day because there were these new names and new commitments, and Josh was a little bit under the radar,'' said Mora, crediting Rosen with helping assemble a class that was ranked No. 4 in the country by Scout, No. 11 by ESPN and No. 13 by Rivals.

Another highly touted player, linebacker Roquan Smith from Georgia, committed to UCLA over the in-state Bulldogs on national television. However, Smith has not sent in his letter of intent as he waits for clarification on whether Bruins defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich would take a position as the Atlanta Falcons' linebackers coach.

The Bruins also added receiver Cordell Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg. But ''Cordell stands on his own'' as a football player, Mora insisted, recalling that he offered a scholarship when Broadus was 15 years old.
