St. Peter's takes control late to beat Brown 77-65

Jersey City, N.J. (AP) Freshman Antwon Portley scored 30 points and St. Peter's beat Brown 77-65 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Portley, a 6-foot-4 guard from Lancaster, Texas, was 10 of 21 from the field and hit 7 of 9 free throws.

Brown led 32-30 at the half. JR Hobbie hit a 3 to push the Bears' lead to 51-42 with 12 minutes left. But Portley took over, scoring 16 of the Peacocks' last 35 points down the stretch.

Trevis Wyche scored 14 and Chazz Patterson added 12 for the Peacocks. Quadir Welton grabbed 10 rebounds.

Tavon Blackmon had 13 for Brown, while Steven Spieth and Cedric Kuakumensah each added 10 points.
