No. 16 Georgetown 73, American U. 46

Chris Wright and Henry Sims scored 12 points and Greg Monroe had nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead No. 16 Georgetown over American 73-46 on Saturday.

Julian Vaughn added 11 points as the Hoyas (6-0) held the Eagles (1-8) to 27 percent shooting from the field. In Georgetown's first five games, opponents scored an average of 54.6 points.

Monroe, the 6-foot-11 sophomore, nearly had his third double-double of the season, but missed 6-of-9 field goals. Sims, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, had his first game in double figures.

After Nick Hendra, who lead the Eagles with 14 points, hit a jumper to tie the score at 9, Georgetown went on a 23-7 run to open up a 32-16 lead with 2:34 to play in the first half. American shot 30 percent in the first half, and went more than 14 minutes without a point from a player other than Hendra.

Georgetown, which held a 34-23 halftime lead, outscored American 29-9 to take a 63-32 lead with 7:53 remaining.

It was the third time the Hoyas held a team to fewer than 50 points.

Last season, the Hoyas started the season 10-1, and ended up with a 15-12 record and a NIT bid. The Eagles won the Patriot League championship, and played in the NCAA tournament.

Georgetown, which begins Big East conference play on Dec. 31 against St. John's, has its biggest test when it plays No. 23 Butler on Dec. 8 at Madison Square Garden.
