Towns, Wiggins lead Wolves to franchise's second highest scoring month

Andrew Wiggins made Timberwolves franchise history on Feb. 25 when he recorded his 17th consecutive 20-point game, besting streaks of Minnesota greats Kevin Garnett and Kevin Love.

His team is on the verge of setting a new franchise record, as well.

Heading into Monday night’s road test against the Sacramento Kings, the Timberwolves are averaging 109 points per game (PPG) in the month of February. It is the second highest scoring average of any month in Timberwolves franchise history, ranking just behind the 110.4 PPG scored in March 2014.

Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns have had outstanding months scoring the basketball. Since Feb. 1, Wiggins ranks fifth in the NBA in scoring (29.0 PPG), and Towns is right behind him with 28.4 PPG, good for sixth in the league. Minnesota is the only team to have two players in February’s NBA top-10 scoring list.

Towns is shooting just under 60 percent from the field for the month, while Wiggins is shooting nearly 52 percent.

The scoring increase may surprise Timberwolves fans, especially after the team lost its third-leading scorer, Zach LaVine, to a season-ending injury on Feb. 3. But point guard Ricky Rubio has picked up the slack. He’s third on the team with 12.1 PPG in February, close to double his total for the month of November (7.0 PPG).

The 2014 Timberwolves team that averaged 110.4 PPG in the month of March was led by Kevin Love (24.1 PPG), Kevin Martin (19.4 PPG), Nikola Pekovic (14.8 PPG) and Corey Brewer (12.2 PPG).

OTHER NOTES

-- Minnesota performs well in Sacramento. The Wolves are 4-4 in their last eight road battles with the Kings, the best road record for Minnesota against any Western Conference team since 2012-13.

-- While Wiggins broke the franchise’s consecutive 20-point games record, Towns isn’t far behind. The 21-year-old center has scored over 20 points in 14 straight games, good for fifth longest in team history.

-- The connection between Rubio and Towns is growing stronger in their second season playing together. Rubio has tallied 161 assists when he throws the ball Towns’ way, ranking the duo second in the NBA and just seven assists behind the Washington Wizards’ John Wall and Bradley Beal (168).
