Minnesota (15-12-1 overall, 6-9-1-1 Big Ten) got back on track in Big Ten play, edging Michigan State 2-1 to grab a crucial conference win at Madison Square Garden on Hockey Day Minnesota 2018.

Casey Mittelstadt and Brent Gates Jr. had a hand in both goals, as the Gophers picked up their sixth Big Ten win. Goaltender Mat Robson started in place of Eric Schierhorn, making 19 saves and improving to 3-1 on the season.

Mittelstadt scored at 11:23 of the first period on a feed from Gates, but the Spartans equalized midway through the third period. Gates came through with the game-winner in his 100th career game, scoring at 16:31 of the third period.
