Washington Redskins: Josh Norman faces big test in 2017

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:10 p.m. ET

Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman can cover No. 1 receivers. The real question is can he keep his composure?

Josh Norman now will get the chance to prove why he's worth $75 million. His breakout season yielded 67 combined tackles and three interceptions. We can't forget he also had 104 yards worth of penalties.

With all the talk that comes with the persona of Norman, fans should expect hype that equates Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, or George Foreman. He's a showman, and a loud one (who also isn't afraid of any fight, literally). Then again, isn't that the problem? We know how he feels about certain receivers.

It's one thing to face the likes of Dez Bryant and Odell Beckham Jr a handful of times during the game. In a recent article, ESPN's John Keim gives a great example:

"The Redskins were criticized for not letting Norman shadow Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown in a season-opening loss. Brown caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Norman rarely covered him."

Maybe if Norman covered Brown we wouldn't have the twerk seen around the world. But it again brings up the issue of him not always blanketing the opposing team's No. 1 receiver.

With the Redskins, this should be the rule of law anyway. The team had one of the worst defenses last season. Norman came with a hefty price. He's not the average cornerback.

The only concern is, with this much exposure to No. 1 Receivers, can he hold it together without costing the team hundreds of yards? Can he make the plays that count and not the wrong plays when the game is on the line?

Josh Norman is ready. He'll say he's ready to see the team win. Can he keep the voices of the NFL's most noted receivers out of his head? Should the Redskins expect chaos on every other down? Norman's maturity will be tested. That's a good thing. He'll get a chance to show everyone why he's worth the investment.
