Rams' Gurley: Patience a necessity in adapting to new offense

Todd Gurley believes patience will be a key as he attempts to built on a nondescript NFL debut.

The 10th overall pick in this year's draft, Gurley mustered only nine yards on six carries in last week's 12-6 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also had one reception for five yards in his first game action since undergoing surgery for a torn ACL last November.

Gurley attributed his lack of productivity more to the difference in blocking schemes from his days at Georgia than the lengthy layoff and is eager to make strides Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.  

“We had an outside zone run (in college at Georgia), but we never ran it," Gurley said per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.. “It definitely requires patience ... making sure you’re pressing the track and making the cut at the heels of the line.

“It’s something new to whole offense and definitely new to me, but it’s no excuse," Gurley said. "We’ll get it down." 

Gurley agreed with the postgame assessment of Rams coach Jeff Fisher that he was close to breaking off some big runs against the Steelers, but he also noted that more carries does not necessarily guarantee more success.

“One carry could be for 80 yards," Gurley said. “It doesn’t matter how many touches I get as long as we win. I’ll let the coaches call that; I don’t call the plays."
