Two life sentences for convicted killer
The woman convicted of killing the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bears player Shaun Gayle received two concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole Friday.
In March, a jury in Waukegan, Ill., found Marni Yang guilty of murdering Rhoni Reuter in 2007.
The key evidence included recorded conversations between Yang and a friend of hers, in which Yang described extensive details of the murder scene.
Gayle was expected to be among those giving victim impact statements during Yang's sentencing hearing Friday, but did not because the defense raised questions about his connection to the case.
Instead, Reuter's brother gave a victim impact statement, talking about his niece who would have been born Dec. 18 and saying the family would never get over the loss.
The judge in the case used the words "methodical," "maniacal" and "meticulous" to describe the crime.
Yang sat quietly in court, and her attorney read a statement on her behalf in court saying she was extremely sorry for what happened.
