Jets rookie sneaks in snooze -- during meeting about sleep

The New York Jets will take the long flight across the pond this week for the team’s showdown with the Miami Dolphins in London’s Wembley Stadium.

Before the epic road trip and in light of how the team will have so little time to adjust, the Jets enlisted the expertise of a sleep specialist to assist the team in its preparations so players and staff could best combat the restlessness and fatigue associated with jet lag.

The specialist met with the team Monday and even though the content of the presentation was educational and informative, it did prompt one unfortunate reaction for Jets rookie Leonard Williams.

It made him sleepy. So he sneaked in a snooze.

“I was kind of nodding off in that meeting, to be honest,” Williams said, via the New York Post. “The guy was telling us it’s all right to go to sleep and he shouldn’t have said that. He turned off the lights.”

Williams, who interestingly just got his driver’s license at the age of 21, insists he generally doesn’t fall asleep during meetings, but simply couldn’t help himself in Monday’s dimly lit lecture.

“I was trying to pay attention,” he said. “The main thing I got out of it was that he said we should try to go to sleep a little earlier than we have been and wake up a little early than we have been because there is going to be a big time difference and we’re going to be kind of jet-lagged.”

Given the amount of preparation and planning that NFL teams are forced to do ahead of the league’s annual cavalcade to Jolly Old England, it’s amazing it apparently still has designs on putting a franchise in London, possibly as soon as 2022. While it is likely travel conditions could be vastly improved over the next handful of years, the rigors of jet lag will never go away.
