Jack Donaldson, on 1st Bengals staff, dies at 86

Jack Donaldson, part of the Cincinnati Bengals' original coaching staff, has died. He was 86.

The team said he died Saturday in Cincinnati.

Donaldson was hired by Paul Brown and stayed on the staff from 1968-77. He spent his first season as defensive line coach and the rest as offensive backfield coach. He coached Bengals teams that reached the playoffs in 1970, 1973 and 1975.

Donaldson was born in Pataskala, Ohio, near Columbus. He started coaching in high schools in Ohio, then moved to the University of Toledo and the New York Jets as an assistant before Brown hired him.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in Cincinnati at the Deupree House.
