Short on running backs, Packers may use Cobb, Montgomery in backfield
An injury to backup running back James Starks could force the Packers to use receivers Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery in the backfield.
Starks has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys with a knee injury, leaving Eddie Lacey as the only available running back. Lacey is injured, too, however, and was a limited participant in practice all week with an ankle injury. He is listed as questionable.
Asked whether he and Montgomery need to be ready to play running back, Cobb told ESPN.com, “Possibly.”
“Honestly, I feel like we've always got to be ready,” Montgomery told ESPN.com. “I know I'm giving you a generic answer, but we've always got to be ready because you never know what could happen.”
• Cam Newton (concussion) cleared to play on Sunday
Both players have seen limited action in the backfield this season. Cobb began his college career at Kentucky as a quarterback and continued to take snaps in the Wildcat formation later in his career, running for 1,313 yards on 228 carries.
