Lewis Hamilton qualifies 14th for the Monaco GP

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton qualified 14th for the Monaco GP on Saturday, although he will likely start Sunday's race from 13th due to a 15-place grid penalty for Jenson Button.

Hamilton advanced out of Q1 easily enough, but he could never come to grips in Q2 where only 10 cars would advance to the final shootout for pole.

At the start of the 15-minute session, he had a slide at the top of Massenet. Hamilton came back into the pits to regroup but lost a lot of time when his car was called to the weigh station.

Hamilton got back out in time for three more laps, but encountered problems on each run. He struggled to come to grips at the start of his run and then caught traffic on his second lap. On his third and final lap, Stoffel Vandoorne crashed at Turn 16 in his McLaren. The yellow flags meant Hamilton was unable to improve on his time.
