Cardinals recall Voit from Memphis, send Mayers down

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals made a move with a pitcher Tuesday, but unlike many recent moves meant to fortify the bullpen, it did not involve another pitcher.

The club optioned right-hander Mike Mayers to Triple-A Memphis and replaced him on the roster with first baseman Luke Voit, who was recalled from the Redbirds.

Voit, 27, opened the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain. He was batting .205 in 12 games at Memphis following his return. Voit, a St. Louis native, batted .246 with four home runs and 18 RBIs for the Cardinals as a rookie last year. He hit .300 (10 for 33) with a home run as a pinch hitter.

Mayers is 0-0 with a 1.35 ERA and one save in four relief appearances (6 2/3 innings) for the Cardinals this season.
