DL Coach Tray Scott leaves Ole Miss for Georgia

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:12 p.m. ET

Tray Scott accepted the defensive line coach position on January 1st at Ole Miss. In an abrupt change, he has now decided to head to the University of Georgia for the same position.

One day after Kirby Smart fired defensive line coach Tracy Rocker, the Bulldogs have already hired his replacement in Tray Scott. Scott had accepted the defensive line job at Ole Miss on January 1st, after coming over from Larry Fedora’s staff at North Carolina. Scott had also been a graduate assistant under Freeze in his first season at Ole Miss in 2012.

Ole Miss released the following statement from head coach Hugh Freeze regarding Tray Scott’s departure:

Clearly Hugh Freeze has to be irritated. Scott is the second coach to sign on with the Rebels, only to leave a month or so later. The other coach was Matt Lubick who was brought in as a wide receiver coach, left for the offensive coordinator position at Baylor. An upwards move at least makes sense. A lateral move on the other hand? That is a whole different story.

Many could point to the NCAA investigation as a reason for Tray Scott to leave but he would have been aware of that situation during the hiring process before he even accepted the job at Ole Miss or at the very latest shortly after being hired. Scott likely could have seen the Georgia job as a better opportunity. Georgia is in a better position to compete for an SEC title than Ole Miss is at the current time of this article, but SEC football dynamics can change overnight. Whatever the reason for Scott leaving, Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze are back in the market for a defensive line coach for the second time in the last two months.
