Carter fuels Norfolk State past Howard in 29-17 win

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Juwan Carter threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns and Norfolk State beat Howard 29-17 on Saturday to end a four-game losing streak.

Down 10-3 to start the second quarter, Carter ended a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a 15-yard TD pass to Cameryn Brent. Then, with six seconds left before halftime, Carter connected with Isaiah Winstead for a 16-yard score that ended a nine-play, 80-yard drive.

Howard took its last lead of the game when Caylin Newton ran it in for an 11-yard score. Josh Nardone responded with field goals of 27 and 31 yards for the Spartans (4-5, 2-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) before Carter sealed with a 37-yard scoring pass to Marcus Taylor with 4:40 left to play. Taylor and Winstead each finished with 74 yards receiving.

Newton threw for 129 yards and a touchdown for the Bison (4-5, 4-3) and was intercepted twice.
