Giménez gets $4M signing bonus in $106.5M Guardians deal

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — All-Star second baseman Andrés Giménez gets a $4 million signing bonus as part of his $106.5 million, seven-year contract with the Cleveland Guardians.

The 24-year-old gets salaries of $1 million this season, $5 million next year, $10 million in 2025, $15 million in 2026 and $23 million in each of the following three seasons. Cleveland has a $23 million option for 2030 with a $2.5 million buyout, and the option price would go up by $500,000 for each top five finish in MVP voting, to a maximum increase of $1 million.

Giménez would get a $250,000 bonus for winning an MVP award, $150,000 for finishing second or third and $75,000 for fourth or fifth.

He would receive $100,000 for All-Star election or selection and for World Series MVP. He would get $50,000 each for a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger or League Championship Series MVP.

Giménez would get a one-time assignment bonus of $1 million if traded. He also gets a hotel suite on road trips.

His deal was announced before Thursday's opener along with a $10 million, four-year contract for right-hander Trevor Stephan.

Stephan, 27, gets $1.35 million this season, $1.6 million next year, $2.3 million in 2025 and $3.5 million in 2026. The Guardians have a $7.25 million option for 2027 with a $1.25 million buyout and, if that is exercised, a $7.5 million option for 2028 with no buyout.

Each option can increase based on finish for the Mariano Rivera/Trevor Hoffman reliever of the year award the previous season: $1 million for winning, $500,000 for second and $250,000 for third.

Stephan would get $250,000 for winning a Cy Young Award, $150,000 for second or third and $75,000 for fourth or fifth. He would get $100,000 for the Rivera/Hoffman award and $50,000 for second, $100,000 for All-Star election or selection and for World Series MVP. He would get $50,000 for World Series MVP.
