Rangers make another pitching move

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Another day, another roster move for the Texas Rangers.

Texas sent right-hander Phil Irwin to Triple A Round Rock and promoted right-hander Matt West to Texas to take Irwin's spot.

West, who was drafted by the Rangers in 2007 as a third baseman, gives the Rangers another fresh arm in a worn-out bullpen. West has pitched for both Frisco and Round Rock this year, going a combined 4-2 with a 3.13 ERA.

"We needed a fresh arm in that bullpen," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "He's throwing the ball well. I saw him throw in spring training for a little bit and he threw the ball well. We'll see everything Round Rock has down there."

Irwin started Tuesday's game and allowed three runs in four innings. Sending him down leaves the Rangers without a starter for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Washington said the club hasn't decided who will get that nod.

The first appearance by West will make him the 49th player used by the Rangers this season. No other team has used more than 46 players. The club has already surpassed the 2013 totals for players used (46), pitchers used (24) and rookies used (13).
