MESA, Ariz. (AP) --
Olympic champion Tyler Clary won the 400-meter individual medley and 200 backstroke, and fellow gold medalists Natalie Coughlin and Nathan Adrian took the 50 freestyle races Friday night in the Arena Grand Prix.

Clary opened the night at Skyline Aquatic Center with a convincing win in the 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 4 minutes, 24.90 seconds, and took the 200 back in 1:58.13.

"I was really happy I was able to pull off the double win tonight," Clary said. "I definitely didn't think I was going to be able to pull off the (200 back) after the 400 IM, but I did and I'm very happy with that."

Coughlin won the women's 50 freestyle in a personal best of 24.90, and Adrian topped the men's field at 21.72.

In the women's 200 free, Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky chased down Olympic teen star Missy Franklin in the final 50 meters to win in 1:56.93. Franklin was second in 1:56.96, then rebounded to win the 200 backstroke in 2:09.35.

Ricky Berens took the men's 200 free in 1:48.93, and Hungary's Katinka Hosszu won the women's 400 individual medley in 4:40.01.
