Cowboys release four players in cap relief effort

The Cap Cutdown has begun at Valley Ranch.

The Cowboys released four players on Friday, the most significant name being defensive end Everette Brown.

There could be bigger names coming, including pricey veterans DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin, as the Cowboys seek to get under the NFL salary cap by the March 11 deadline.

The Cowboys are reported to be in the neighborhood of $20 million over the cap as the deadline approaches. The cap for 2014 has not been officially announced, but it's expected to rise to $133 million, an increase of nearly $10 million over last season.

That's not enough to solve the Cowboys' salary problems. Friday's cuts were merely a first step.

Brown signed with the Cowboys at the end of October as part of the revolving door on the defensive line last season. He appeared in seven games as a backup and finished with seven tackles, one sack, two tackles for losses and four pressures.

Defensive tackle Corvey Irvin was also part of the revolving door in 2013. Irvin did not sign with the Cowboys until Nov. 12 and played in six games with five tackles, one pressure and one pass breakup.

Also cut were offensive guards Ray Dominguez and offensive Jeff Olson.

Dominguez was a futures signing in Jan. 2013 and spent the entire season on the practice squad.

Olson was a 2013 training camp signee for depth but missed the season because of injury.
