IRVING — Although outsiders were calling for the Dallas Cowboys to draft a safety in the early rounds, they didn't address the position until the final round.

Dallas selected Baylor safety Ahmad Dixon with the 248th overall pick.

An emotional Dixon struggled to speak at times during his Valley Ranch conference call, fighting back tears as he explained how happy he was to become a Cowboy.

"It feels amazing," Dixon said. "This is the team I grew up watching as a kid. Watching the Cowboys is pretty much how I learned how to play football. My late mother was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan. I know right now she's in Heaven going crazy.

"I couldn't ask for a better situation."

Dixon (6-0, 212 pounds) finished his senior year with 81 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception in 13 games. He's considered a very good tackler that's limited in coverage. Dixon recorded four interceptions in three seasons as a starter.
