Calgary Flames: Concerns For Brian Elliott Are Out The Door

The Calgary Flames won 3-2 in a shootout against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night and Brian Elliott got his first win as a Flame. Is Elliott finally out of his slump?

The Calgary Flames got their second win of the season on Monday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. Goalie Brian Elliott also earned his first win in net as a Flame and earned the first star of the game. He saved 31 out of 33 shots and allowed no goals in the shootout. Is Elliott finally being Elliott again?

The new Flames net-minder allowed just two goals in the entire game, including in the shootout. And I’d just like to note that the two goals he let in weren’t bad goals. One was a giveaway in the Flames zone leading to a rocket shot and the other bounced off TJ Brodie’s skate. Both very difficult saves for a goaltender to make and definitely not at fault of the goaltender. I’d even go as far as to say that trying to save a goal that has an unfortunate bounce off one of your defense-men is nearly impossible.

He also had a massive game-saving save in the dying seconds of the game where he extended his leg and got a beauty of a pad save. I just. You guys need to see this.

There were some concerns in his first few games. He didn’t perform up to everyone’s standards, even though he had an incredible preseason. I mean, I hate to say “I told you so” but I have said from the beginning that this is not something to be concerned about. I said it will take three weeks tops before he gets back into his game (insert sunglasses emoji).

He also managed to save the three shots that came on the power play and ended the night with a 0.939 save percentage. Elliott now has a sv% of 0.867. Of course, it still is not the best, but it’s definitely a big increase from what is was before this game at 0.828. He has only played four games so far in the season, but he just needs to take it one day at a time, one game at a time.

Flames vs Blues

More from Flame for Thought

Tonight will be a fun game, seeing how he’s matching up against his old team for the first time. The Calgary Flames play against the St. Louis Blues and Elliott will face his old fans again. Definitely an exciting game to watch. Of course, you want to beat them with everything in you.

Brian Elliott was definitely a big factor in the Blues success over the last few seasons. From 2011-2015, he had the second highest save percentage of all goaltenders who have played over 50 games a season. Last season, he had an injury so he didn’t play 50 games, but he still managed to lead in save percentage of all goaltenders who played over 30 games. Definitely a respectable guy and one of the most consistent goalies in the league.

I can’t wait to see the amount of success Brian Elliott gives to the Calgary Flames.

Then the entire team will be on the loose.

    Sorry, bad joke.
