Dale Jr. dominating Twitter, following grows at staggering pace

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:30 p.m. ET

A whirlwind Sunday stretched well into Monday for Dale Earnhardt Jr., and if there was any question about the ability of NASCAR star power to cross over to the social masses, looks like we have quite a resounding answer.

Shortly after winning the long-delayed Daytona 500 on Sunday night, the most popular driver in NASCAR made good on a promise to fans to send out his first tweet. At the time, he had between 230,000 and 240,000 followers. Again — despite the fact he had never actually tweeted anything.

Well, the medium must have really struck a chord with 88, as he continued to tweet on Monday, tweeting photos from an airplane, the "Late Show" and his late father's statue at Daytona International Speedway.

But as impressive as his ability to handle Twitter as well as he can a stock car, this number is even more eye-popping:

465,000

That's the estimated number of followers Earnhardt had on Twitter less than 24 hours after his first tweet. That's right — one day, six tweets, more than 200,000 new followers . . . or almost a doubling of his audience. No wonder he is NASCAR's king of Madison Avenue.

So what did Earnhardt do, aside from being Dale Earnhardt Jr., to build such a following? See for yourself:
