Kalitta leads Top Fuel qualifying

Doug Kalitta led Top Fuel qualifying Friday in the Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway with a run of 3.889 seconds at 310.13 mph.

''We're trying hard and love running here at Bandimere,'' Kalitta said. ''We just hope it holds through tomorrow and we stay No. 1. We gave it all we have and we're real happy it stuck.''

Cruz Pedregon topped the Funny Car field, Allen Johnson led in Pro Stock, and Adam Arana was the fastest in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Pedregon broke his own track record with a pass of 4.073 at 307.37.

''I consider it an honor to come back here and break that,'' Pedregon said. ''This track is awesome. I knew someone was going to run quicker than my 4.09 and I'm just glad it was us that did it.''

Defending series champion Johnson had a run of 6.949 at 198.23 in a Dodge Avenger, and Arana finished in 7.267 at 182.62 on a Buell.
