Giants' Bumgarner says he'd pitch in ASG despite short rest

While the pitchers for the All-Star Game have yet to be announced (let alone the starting position players) Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News points out that Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner will probably be named to the team for the third consecutive year. Considering his 2.99 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 108 1/3 innings, and the fact that the National League manager is his own manager, Bruce Bochy, that’s probably a safe assumption.

Interestingly, despite being selected twice before, Bumgarner has yet to appear in the ASG. Baggarly notes that MadBum is scheduled to pitch the Friday before the game, giving him three full days of rest. When asked about that by Baggarly, Bumgarner responded saying, “two is plenty.”

Of course, Bumgarner is referring to the fact that he pitched five innings of shutout relief in Game 7 of the World Series last year on two-days’ rest.

Maybe Bochy will let him do the same on three-day’s rest on July 14. Though considering how many Royals are poised to start the game for the AL, perhaps Bochy should have him start.
