Cubs should be active at deadline with chance at postseason

The Chicago Cubs weren’t supposed to contend seriously until 2016. But they’re one of five National League clubs in a playoff position as the All-Star break nears, and their front office must adjust accordingly ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

The Cubs need not act out of desperation or tear apart their well-conceived plan to build a perennial contender on the North Side. Yet, they should make a move or two and fortify a roster that, according to the FanGraphs.com postseason odds, has a 65.8 percent chance of reaching at least the National League Wild Card Game.
