Matt Hagan takes Funny Car qualifying lead

LAS VEGAS (AP) Matt Hagan took the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday in the NHRA Nationals.

Paired against Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps for both runs, Hagan topped the field with a 4.063-second run at 320.58 mph in his Dodge Charger.

”I always try to put the extra effort in during qualifying, but especially when we’re running a teammate,” Hagan said. ”It is bragging rights when you go out and lay one on your teammate. That always puts a smile on my face.”

Steve Torrence had the Top Fuel lead, and Jeg Coughlin topped the Pro Stock field.

Torrence had a 3.779 at 310.91, and Coughlin finished in 6.625 at 208.78 in a Dodge Dart.

Coughlin, the defending Pro Stock series champion and a five-time winner in Las Vegas, will race Saturday in the eight-man K&N Horsepower Challenge bonus event.
