Salvador Perez, the Kansas City Royals' All-Star and Gold Glove catcher, will be out for a while -- it is uncertain how long -- with a right elbow injury he suffered Wednesday during a team workout at spring training.

Perez, 28, underwent an MRI on Thursday that revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. He will get a second opinion early next week from Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

Perez has played in one Cactus League game this spring, serving as the designated hitter Tuesday.

Perez is coming off a season in which he batted .235 with 27 home runs and 80 RBIs, was named an American League All-Star and earned AL Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards at catcher.
