(STATS) - Nicholls is making sure the driving force behind its turnaround will keep pushing the Colonels forward.

The Southland Conference school and coach Tim Rebowe have agreed to a new four-year contract through the 2021 season, athletic director Matt Roan said Thursday.

Nicholls went 8-4 last season, qualifying for the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2005. The Colonels finished No. 25 in the STATS FCS Top 25.

"Coach Rebowe has exceeded every expectation placed before him during his time leading our program, and I'm excited that he'll be in charge for the foreseeable future," Roan said. "He is more than our head football coach; he is an ambassador of Nicholls."

In 2015, Rebowe inherited a Colonels program on an 18-game losing streak. After losing their first five games, they won three of their final six to finish 3-8.

A year later, they rose to 5-6, including a two-point loss to Georgia, and were 5-4 in the Southland.

Last year's breakthrough season included Nicholls' highest win total since 1996 and a 7-2, third-place finish in the conference.

All 10 players who earned All-Southland honors last year are returning. The Colonels will kick off the season Sept. 1 at Kansas.
