Atlanta Braves Player News: All Positions

News: Newcomb was optioned to the Braves' alternate site after Monday's game against the Phillies, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Newcomb did not give his team a chance Monday, allowing eight runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- over 1.1 innings. His ERA now sits at 11.20 through 13.2 innings, and the Braves have decided to make do with their other options rather than turn back to Newcomb the next time through the rotation. Manager Brian Snitker indicated the team is leaning toward bringing up a prospect to replace Newcomb.
News: Inciarte will be on the bench Monday against the Phillies.
Impact: Inciarte clearly seems to have fallen out of favor in Atlanta, as he's now started just one of the team's last five games. It's hard to say he's earned regular at-bats, as he's hitting just .171/.293/.229. Ronald Acuna again shifts to center field, with Nick Markakis starting in right.
News: Freeman went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored in an 8-0 victory over Philadelphia in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Impact: Freeman opened the game's scoring with a two-run homer off Phillies starter Spencer Howard in the third inning. He needed just a single to complete the cycle. After his six total hits Sunday, Freeman's slash line is up to .276/.382/.552 with 15 runs scored and 12 RBI this season.
News: Acuna went 4-for-4 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored in an 8-0 victory over Philadelphia in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Impact: After launching his second homer of the season in the first game Sunday, Acuna blasted a pair to double his season total in the second contest. The 22-year-old superstar raised his season OPS to .913 with nine extra-base hits in 76 plate appearances.
News: Fried (3-0) tossed five scoreless innings Sunday, allowing four hits and a walk while earning the win in the second game of the doubleheader against the Phillies. He struck out six.
Impact: Fried was terrific with his fourth consecutive start allowing two or fewer runs to start the season. He put himself in a bit of danger in the fifth inning; a single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, but Fried escaped after forcing Bryce Harper to fly out. The 26-year-old southpaw will carry a 1.59 ERA into Saturday's road matchup against the Marlins.
News: Sobotka was returned to the Braves' alternate training site Sunday.
Impact: Sobotka served in Atlanta's bullpen as the 29th man for Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies. He came in to finish the contest in the second game of the twin bill, firing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits or walks and striking out one. He could be an option to fill in later in the season, but he'll continue working at the alternate training site for now.
News: Duvall went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI during the win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies.
Impact: After starting in three consecutive contests, Duvall came off the bench for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. However, he provided a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning that gave the team some insurance runs. Duvall's playing time could take a hit with Nick Markakis back in the fold for Atlanta, but he proved Sunday that he can still make an impact.
News: Melancon earned the save in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks. He struck out zero.
Impact: Melancon has been dominant over his first five innings this year. He hasn't allowed any runs while posting a 0.80 WHIP across five appearances. As a result, he's been rewarded with three saves and a win. The right-hander likely still carries a relatively short leash due to the Braves' depth among their late relievers, but he hasn't done anything to make the team question putting him in during save situations.
News: Matzek (2-0) fired 1.2 scoreless innings as he earned the win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies. He allowed no hits and two walks while striking out one.
Impact: Matzek has been sharp out of the bullpen to begin the season as he still hasn't allowed any runners to cross the plate, and he was rewarded with his second win in his last three appearances during the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Despite his recent string of victories, the left-hander has limited fantasy value as a middle reliever.
News: Ynoa allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one over 2.1 innings in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact: Ynoa made his first MLB start in the first game of Sunday's twin bill, and he limited the Phillies' production despite lasting just 39 pitches. While the right-hander could be available to make spot starts for Atlanta this year, his primary role with the pitching staff should be as a lower-leverage reliever.
News: Hechavarria is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies.
Impact: Hechavarria received the start in Game 1 and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, but he should continue to see regular time at second base while Ozzie Albies (wrist) remains sidelined. Johan Camargo will operate at the keystone in Game 2 for Atlanta.
News: Inciarte is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader in Philadelphia.
Impact: Inciarte started in center field and batted ninth in the matinee, going 0-for-3. Ronald Acuna will shift to center field for Game 2 with Adam Duvall and Nick Markakis starting in left and right field, respectively.
News: The Braves activated Erlin ahead of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies.
Impact: After being claimed off waivers from the Pirates on Friday, Erlin will be able to make his Braves debut in the twin bill. Erlin previously made two appearances out of the Pittsburgh bullpen, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over 3.1 innings while striking out four.
News: The Braves recalled Sobotka from their alternate training site ahead of Sunday's doubleheader with the Phillies.
Impact: Sobotka was demoted after Saturday's 5-0 loss to clear a spot in the bullpen for Robbie Erlin, but the Braves will bring the former back as the 29th man for the twin bill. The right-hander has tossed a pair of scoreless innings across his two relief appearances this season.
News: Duvall is out of the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Phillies.
Impact: The right-handed-hitting Duvall will head to the bench after starting each of the Braves' past three games, during which he went 2-for-8 with a home run and a walk. He should still have a path to making regular starts versus left-handed pitching, but Duvall's hopes of settling into a full-time role have likely taken a hit after Nick Markakis (personal) was activated from the restricted list Wednesday.
News: Riley is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader in Philadelpha.
Impact: Riley will head to the bench for the second time in the past three games, but he may rejoin the lineup for Game 2. Johan Camargo will start at the hot corner in the matinee.
News: D'Arnaud is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies.
Impact: The 31-year-old was never likely to start both games of the twinbill, and he'll take a seat for the matinee. D'Arnaud should return to the lineup for the nightcap, while Tyler Flowers starts behind the plate for Game 1.
