Giants’ Matt Duffy finds gaping in hole in Padres’ extreme outfield shift

Like the rest of MLB, the San Diego Padres shift their defense depending on who’s at the plate. For the most part, shifts work … but not always. On Tuesday night, it backfired on the Padres.

With Matt Duffy at the dish, the Padres decided to move their outfield so that no one was playing center field. Naturally, Duffy hit what would have been a routine fly ball to center, which wound up going for a double.

This is about as extreme as a shift gets, and Duffy made the Padres pay. The Giants went on to win 8-2 with Duffy scoring one of those runs on a 1-for-3 day.
