Philadelphia Phillies rookie reliever Michael Stutes strained a right side muscle and was removed after throwing only three pitches in the sixth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Stutes fell behind 3-0 to Lance Berkman leading off the sixth before looking to the dugout for help and pointing at his right shoulder. Kyle Kendrick replaced Stutes with the Phillies trailing 1-0.

Stutes had made eight appearances, seven of them scoreless. He began the year as the closer for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
