Mets' Syndergaard loses bid for perfect game on hit in 7th
NEW YORK (AP) Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard has lost his bid for a perfect game when Will Venable singled on the first pitch of the seventh inning.
Venable lined a clean single up the middle Tuesday night, and Syndergaard received a warm ovation from the Citi Field crowd. Yangervis Solarte followed with an infield single, but Syndergaard pitched out of trouble without any damage.
The hard-throwing righty had struck out seven in his 14th major league start. San Diego is the first team to face Syndergaard twice.
New York was leading 2-0 thanks to Lucas Duda's two-run homer off James Shields in the first.
The only no-hitter in Mets history was pitched by Johan Santana on June 1, 2012.
Syndergaard allowed a career-high seven runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 7-2 loss at San Diego on June 2. He also struck out 10 and walked none in that game.
