Jerry Jones believes Tony Romo can play 5 more years and will win a Super Bowl
It was impossible not to see how gut-wrenching it was for Tony Romo to concede the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback job to rookie Dak Prescott earlier this week. Romo struggled to get through the prepared statement he made to the media, saying that he was handing the reins to the 23-year-old to help the team.
But if you think Romo’s career is nearing its end, you’d be making a mistake – at least that’s what Jerry Jones believes.
The flamboyant Cowboys owner told the Star-Telegram that he thinks Romo, 36, can play another five years and will be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. And Jones isn't ready to say that Romo has played his last season with in Dallas.
That’s difficult to believe at this point, considering Romo missed all but four games last season after suffering multiple collarbone injuries and has yet to take a snap this year after sustaining a back injury in the preseason. And the veteran quarterback counts $20 million against the cap this season, a number that will rise each of the next two years if he remains on the roster and does not restructure his current deal.
There’s no denying Romo's production over his 12-year career, throwing for 34,154 yards with 247 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. But his injury history makes it nearly impossible to fathom that he could play until he’s 41 and win a Super Bowl.
