Darnell McDonald has been cut by the New York Yankees to make room on the roster for CC Sabathia.
The ace left-hander was set to come off the disabled list Tuesday night to pitch against Toronto, his first start since June 24. Sabathia was sidelined with a groin strain, his first trip to the DL since joining the Yankees for the 2009 season.
McDonald was hitless in four at-bats with the Yankees after they claimed him off waivers from rival Boston on July 4. The outfielder was designated for assignment Tuesday, giving New York 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors.
McDonald batted .214 with two homers and nine RBIs in 84 at-bats for the Red Sox this season.
