Report: Steinbrenners consider buying British soccer club

Published Jul. 19, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Steinbrenners are considering adding an English Premier League soccer club to their portfolio.

Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, who took over the Yankees after the death of their father, George, last week, might buy Tottenham Hotspur for $688 million, the British newspaper Daily Star reported.

Hank Steinbrenner was quoted in the Star as having said the Yankees owners’ only interest in another team “would be a major soccer team in Europe, preferably in the Premier League. That’s always a possibility for me.”

Tottenham’s owners may want to sell because they suffered losses in the Bear Stearns brokerage collapse.
