Indians' Chris Johnson sent to hospital after spider bite

Published Aug. 17, 2015 2:02 p.m. ET

The newest member of the Cleveland Indians missed two games this weekend for a very odd reason.

Johnson, who was recently acquired in a trade with the Braves, believes he was bitten by a spider while staying at the team hotel in Minnesota.

The Tribe utility man said he woke with what appeared to be a spider bite on his left hand Saturday morning and was treated at the stadium. Johnson's hand became swollen by Sunday, and he went to a Minneapolis hospital for treatment. He was given antibiotics and had the hand wrapped but might miss more time as Cleveland heads to Boston for a series starting Monday.

"I tried to get the swelling and infection out of there because I guess whatever bit me, it got infected," Johnson told reporters on Sunday. "Hoping the swelling goes down in a couple days and I can start swinging the bat again."

Johnson came to Cleveland in the Nick Swisher/Michael Bourn trade two weeks ago and began his Indians career by going 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles in six games.
