Mularkey tabs Antonio Andrews as Titans' 'workhorse' running back

Tennessee Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey said Tuesday the team will be giving the bulk of carries at running back to second-year player Antonio Andrews, beginning with Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

The decision to identify Andrews as the starter differs from the "running back by committee' approach the team took under former head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Andrews, Bishop Sankey and Dexter McCluster have all seen time as Tennessee's main back this season.

“I think Antonio (Andrews) is the workhorse as we speak right now,’’ Mularkey said, per the team's official website. “As you’ve seen, Dexter (McCluster) has had his carries as a changeup for us. Bishop (Sankey), again, I know he hasn’t had carries in the last couple of weeks, but we’re trying. Based on the run scheme that we’ve had in these last couple of weeks, it hasn’t called upon his ability. But if we were going to force it, it would be to Antonio right now.”

Andrews, who has run for 202 yards and two touchdowns on the year, is the Titans' leading rusher.

“I look at it as me reaching my goal that I set back in the offseason,’’ Andrews said. “I told y’all I wanted to be a starter and I reached that goal. The new (goal) is to win out the rest of the season.
