Governor Cuomo signs law allowing Daily Fantasy Sports back in New York

On Mar. 21, 2016, DraftKings and FanDuel, daily fantasy sports' biggest companies, agreed to suspend operations as part of a provisional settlement with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Per a report via Sports Illustrated: "The settlement stayed their litigation over the legality of DFS under New York law on the condition that New York expressly legalizes DFS by June 30."

Fast-forward to Saturday, June 18: The New York State Senate passed a bill to permit daily fantasy sports to be played legally in New York by a vote of 45-17. Next and final stop of the legislation's journey: the Governor's office.

With the NFL season rapidly approaching and daily fantasy sports still not available to play in one of the most populous states in the union, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the measure — which calls the popular online contests a "game of skill" — into law on Wednesday afternoon, officially legalizing DFS within the state's borders.

"This legislation strikes the right balance that allows this activity to continue with oversight from state regulators, new consumer protections, and more funding for education," Cuomo said via the Associated Press.
